Police Intern Program

Part of the City Manager’s Update of May 16, 2014

The Department hosted two interns, from April 15 through April 18. The interns were seniors at Leadership Public School in Richmond and were participants in the school’s Learning without Walls Program. In this program, students from the school spend a week participating in unpaid internships. Interns Patricio Martinez and Jesus Valdez spent a week learning about the Police Department and its role in policing the community. They learned the fundamental duties of patrol officers, detectives, records staff, evidence technicians, dispatchers, and CRT members. The students created a police department presentation for middle school children. The interns created a PowerPoint presentation and provided learning points they personally experienced during the week. Both students reported that their perceptions of police changed dramatically during their internship.
