City Manager’s Update of July  17, 2014

The Engineering Division has issued an Encroachment Permit along with a Police Department Street Closure Permit for a criterium-style bicycle race to be held on Sunday, July 27, 2014 in both the cities of Albany and El Cerrito using the roadway loop formed by Portland Avenue, Key Route Boulevard (north bound), Thousand Oaks Boulevard, Ramona Avenue, Ward Avenue, and Carmel Avenue. This event is run by the Berkeley Bicycle Club, East Bay Velo Club, Albany High School Mountain Bike Team, Red Kite Racing and USA Cycling. The event has been permitted by the City of Albany in past years. This year, permits were also required from the City of El Cerrito because the course had to be extended to avoid a section of Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Albany, which has been affected by construction work for a PG&E gas vault project.
All of the roadways that are part of the course will be closed to traffic from 5:00 AM to 7:30 PM on Sunday, July 27, 2014. The following El Cerrito street segments are affected:
• Ramona Avenue south of Ward Avenue
• Ward Avenue between Ramona Avenue and Carmel Avenue
• Carmel Avenue south of Ward Avenue

All curbside parked vehicles will also have to be removed from these roads by 5:00 AM on Sunday, July 27, 2014.

Traffic marshals will be stationed around the course and at each closure point to assist with local access while the roads are closed to traffic. The event organizers have sent event notifications to the residents along the bike course describing the road closures and parking restrictions.
