In February, the Lung Association released its annual State of Tobacco Control - California Local Grades report, which issues grades for local
municipalities in California on policies for smoke-free outdoor air, smoke-free
housing, and reducing sales of tobacco products. The Lung Association also
released its annual State of Tobacco Control report, which
examines tobacco control policies at the state and federal level. With the City’s new tobacco retailer license
program, El Cerrito improved from an F to an A in the category, “Reducing Sales
of Tobacco Products” and received an overall grade of A. El Cerrito was also
highlighted in the report for being among only a handful of California cities
to ban flavored tobacco products.
A Contra Costa Times article
about the report noted El Cerrito’s recent accomplishments: http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_29470357/bay-area-leads-state-tobacco-control-policies-new.
Information
about the new tobacco retailer license program is on the City’s website at www.el-cerrito.org/tobaccoretailers. Staff is currently
processing the 16 license applications for existing retailers, including
determining if 4 retailers are in early compliance with all of the regulations.
Since the Council adopted the program, two retailers who previously sold
tobacco (Goody Donuts and R & R Auto Services) have ceased selling tobacco
products.
