FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 7, 2019

El Cerrito Welcomes New Fire Chief

El Cerrito, Calif. – The City of El Cerrito announces the promotion of Michael Pigoni to Fire Chief. He succeeds Chief Lance Maples, effective December 31,2018. Having served under three Fire Chiefs during his time in El Cerrito, Pigoni says he is honored to have an opportunity to lead the men and women who dedicate and risk their lives to protect and provide emergency care to the public.

Chief Pigoni came to the City of El Cerrito as a firefighter in 1995, was promoted to Captain in 2000, and then to Battalion Chief in 2007. Over the years, he has been responsible for overseeing the Fire Department's fleet, securing grants, and developing the Fire Department's technical rescue capabilities. As a Battalion Chief, Chief Pigoni was responsible for the department's operation needs including policy & procedure development and implementation. He is a strike team and task force leader as well as a member of the East Bay Incident Management Team.

His priorities will be focused on working with Public Works, partnering agencies, and the public to continue and increase our vegetation management programs. There will be a renewed focus on emergency operations and updating plans to insure the City is properly trained to handle potential disasters such as a large earthquake.

His father was a longtime volunteer firefighter and retired as the Fire Chief in Geyserville. Chief Pigoni started responding to emergency calls in Geyserville when he was 16 years old and continued as a volunteer firefighter there until 2010. He also served 16 years as an elected Board Member for the Geyserville Fire Protection District. Chief Pigoni resides in Sonoma County with his wife, Carol, and their family.
