Are you interesting in learning about the plants and animals around you? Join your neighbors for the 2019 City Nature Challenge! On April 26-29 people around the world will participate in this friendly competition to record the most local flora and fauna. Here in El Cerrito, UC Berkeley scientists will be available 10am-noon on April 27 to provide training and help you get started on a nature walk in the Hillside Natural Area. Meet at the trailhead for the Memorial Grove on Schmidt Lane between Navellier St. and the Recycling Center.
You can also participate on your own by downloading the iNaturalist app and taking photos of the plants, animals, and fungi around you. Ants in your backyard? That weed in the sidewalk? These all count toward our Bay Area score. More details at http://citynaturechallenge.org/participate-2/

Madera Broom Pull (April 28, 2019)
The EQC and Trail Trekkers hosted two Madera Broom Pulls that were so successful they are doing it a third time. In mid-February and then March volunteers from both the city’s Green Teams and Trekkers gathered at Madera Open Space to remove invasive broom. It’s a fast spreading invader. Besides crowding out native plants, broom also makes trails impassable. It almost made one trail impassable right at this spot! The volunteers have made good progress but come help finish the job – at least for this season.
April 30, 2019, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM @ El Cerrito City Hall
