BART Earthquake Safety Program

Overview
Bay Area Rapid Transit District ("BART") has begun a major retrofit of facilities, including those in the City of El Cerrito. BART's $1.2 billion Earthquake Safety Program will strengthen the transit district's core system to better withstand a major earthquake.

This passenger safety improvement program is funded by the 2004 voter-approved Measure AA. Over the next four years, BART crews will undertake major upgrades to the El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte stations and the elevated structures along the Ohlone Greenway. Stations will stay open but portions of the greenway will occasionally close, and pedestrians will have to detour through city streets. Residents and BART riders should expect temporary construction- related noise, dust, and traffic delays as well as loss of parking on streets and at BART stations. BART will post notices to keep people informed and to indicate detours.
