FREE Compost Giveaway- for El Cerrito Residents
September 26 - October 2, 2015 

While supplies last, El Cerrito residents can get up to 6 cubic feet (45 gallons = 9-5 gal buckets) of compost made from yardwaste and foodscrap! Bring proof of residency, containers or boxes to take the compost home.  A shovel is provided. Please expect to list your name and address on a spreadsheet clipped to a board in front of the compost enclosures.  Enter the main gate, drive around the circle.  The compost is located on the right side, near the exit.  For non-residents, compost is available for purchase: $1.50 per cubic foot.

Hours: M-F, 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM; Sat-Sun, 9:00 AM- 4:30 PM

Understanding "Plant Destroyers"

An educational panel discussion on controlling the spread of plant pathogens and minimizing their impact on native plants. 

Phytophthora or “plant destroyer” soil pests can be spread through native plant nursery stock propagation or restoration efforts. Speakers will be El Cerrito Councilmember Greg Lyman, habitat-restoration engineer for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission; Diana Benner, principal at the Watershed Nursery and a pioneer curbing these Phytophthora pathogens; and Susan Frankel, plant pathologist with the US Forest Service.

Sponsored by The El Cerrito Environmental Quality Committee and Friends of Five Creeks. There will be an opportunity for audience questions and answers from the panel of experts on this topic.

Recycling Center's Drop-off  Winter Hours start November 1, 2015
Winter Hours:  Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:45 PM | Saturday & Sunday 9:00 AM - 4:45 PM 

Starting November 1, 2015, the Recycling Center will begin closing at 4:45 PM during the week.  The winter hours do not affect weekend drop-off hours.  The Administrative Business office remain the same: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM seven days a week.  Questions??  510-215-4350 or

El Cerrito Environmental Quality Committee (EQC)
Meets every 2nd Tuesday | 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

The EQC is a Council-appointed body of residents and business representatives who work to involve the community directly in understanding and reducing our impact on the environment. Regular meetings of the EQC often host informative presentations on environmental issues and policies. Vegetable Gardening in El Cerrito

4th Saturdays, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
The El Cerrito Community Garden Network and El Cerrito Library are teaming up to provide a series of monthly introductory vegetable gardening workshops running April through November, no workshop in August.  The workshop format will be a 30-minute presentation at the Library and then a hands-on project (30-60 minutes) at the nearby Community Demonstration Garden in Fairmont Park.
