Recycling Center Winter Hours
November 1, 2016 through February 1, 2017
Monday - Friday: 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM
Saturday & Sunday: 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM

The El Cerrito Recycling + Environmental Resource Center will be closing 1 hour earlier on weekdays due to the shorter days of winter.

Holiday Schedule for Solid Waste Collection

The El Cerrito Recycling + Environmental Resource Center and East Bay Sanitary offices will be closed for business for the following holidays: December 24, 25, and 26, 2016 and January 1 and 2, 2017. On December 23, the Recycling Center Office will be closed but other facility functions will remain open. On December 31, the Recycling Center will close at 12:30 pm.

Curbside collection of Recycling, Green Waste, and Garbage will occur as normally scheduled on these holidays. Christmas trees will be picked up free of charge through January 13.

Green Team Event: Clean up El Cerrito's Northern Gateway
Saturday, January 14, 2017
10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Help El Cerrito's Green Teams clean up the northern entryways to town. Help keep trash from polluting the creeks and the bay, and present visitors with a positive first impression of the city. Wear a hat and bring water. Meet at the Ohlone Greenway at Hill Street. Heavy rain cancel this event. Sponsored by the Environmental Quality Committee.

Creekside History Stroll
Saturday, January 21, 2017

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join an easy walk along Cerrito Creek, from El Cerrito Plaza towards the Bay. Focus is on the natural history of the creek, its changes over the years, and the care provided in recent years. Other topics are Native American settlements, the early settlement of Rust, the dynamite factory that was alongside Albany Hill (and its Chinese workers), and more. Meet at Creekside Park, Cerrito Creek at Santa Clara Ave. Presented by El Cerrito Historical Society, El Cerrito Trail TrekkersFriends of Five Creeks and the Environmental Quality Committee.

Green Team Event: Motorcycle Hill Work Party and Historical Discussion
Saturday, February 25, 2017
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Learn about the days when hundreds of motorcycles zoomed up Motorcycle Hill, while helping El Cerrito Trail Trekkers, Friends of Five Creeks, and the Environmental Quality Committee remove invasive Scotch broom and complete the Motorcycle Hill Trail. Meet at the foot of Motorcycle Hill, corner of Blake St. and Ganges Ave. If it rains, meet on March 4.

Green El Cerrito Compost Give-Away
Saturday, March 18 - Friday, March 24, 2017
9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Free compost made from your yard waste and food scraps.  El Cerrito residents and businesses only. Bring proof of residency and containers. Limit of 5 cubic feet per household. Available while supply lasts. We will have a shovel available; however, you may want to bring one. Recycling Center, 7501 Schmidt Lane.

Green Team Event: Cerrito Creek Spruce-Up
Saturday, April 8, 2017 
10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

We will work alongside Cerrito Creek as it borders El Cerrito Plaza, and in nearby tributary creeks. The creek is beautiful here but needs some care. Meet at Junket Deli, 235 El Cerrito Plaza. Sponsored by the Environmental Quality Committee.

Earth Day
Saturday, April 22, 2017 
11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Each year in April, the City celebrates Earth Day through a morning of volunteerism and work parties, followed by socializing and music at our Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. You can host a work party or volunteer as a group or individual. For more information, visit here.

Hillside Festival
Sunday, May 21, 2017 
 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Join the Environmental Quality Committee, El Cerrito Trail Trekkers, Friends of Five Creeks, and the El Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Team in discovering the Hillside Natural Area through talks, hikes, and displays on the unique history and nature of one of El Cerrito's best-kept secrets. To start out, meet on the meadow about the Schmidt Lane entrance to Hillside Natural Area. Schedule of events to be posted here.

El Cerrito Environmental Quality Committee (EQC)
Meets every 2nd Tuesday | 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
El Cerrito City Hall Council Chambers, 10890  San Pablo Avenue
The EQC is a Council-appointed body of residents and business representatives who work to involve the community directly in understanding and reducing our impact on the environment. Regular meetings of the EQC often host informative presentations on environmental issues and policies. Vegetable Gardening in El Cerrito

4th Saturdays, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
 
The El Cerrito Community Garden Network and El Cerrito Library are teaming up to provide a series of monthly introductory vegetable gardening workshops running April through November, no workshop in August.  The workshop format will be a 30-minute presentation at the Library and then a hands-on project (30-60 minutes) at the nearby Community Demonstration Garden in Fairmont Park.
