Types of Work
Measure A Roadwork in 2010 includes patch paving, slurry seal and pavement rehabilitation work.

We understand many residents and businesses will be impacted in some manner by the roadwork in 2010 and we will make every effort to minimize inconveniences and provide advance notice so you can plan accordingly. If your street is scheduled to be worked on this year, watch for future notices regarding parking restrictions and street closures in your area during construction. The notice will include specific start dates and exact impacts for your area and other information from the Contractor.

Slurry Seals
Photo of Roadwork A slurry seal is a type of thin resurfacing treatment used for streets that are structurally sound. It is installed relatively quickly but takes most of the day to harden before it can be opened up to traffic.

Resurfacing involves applying a thin, 1/4” overlay to the surface of the roadway. This protects the roadway and slows its rate of deterioration, as well as creates a smooth surface. After the resurfacing is completed, pavement markings, striping and signage will be replaced or upgraded as appropriate.

IMPACTS: Slurry Seal work will require full restrictions on Driveway, Parking and Street Access. No parking on street for the entire work day. No driveway access for the entire work day. The portion of the street being resurfaced will be closed to vehicular traffic (except for emergency vehicles) for entire work day.

Slurry Seal Patches
Slurry seal patches will be performed over certain existing utility trenches. If the utility patch is in the middle of the street, the slurry patch will be a minimum of 4’ past the length of the patch and across the entire roadway from gutter to gutter. If the utility patch is only on one side of the street, the slurry patch will be a minimum of 4’ past the length of the patch and the width will be from the gutter to centerline.

IMPACTS: Slurry Seal work will require limited restrictions on Driveway and Parking only in the immediate area of work. Street Access will be limited--The portion of the street being resurfaced will be closed to vehicular traffic (except for emergency vehicles) for entire work day.

Pavement Rehabilitation
Photo of roadwork Inlays and Overlays are types of treatments used for streets that are structurally deficient. With an Inlay, a portion of the existing pavement is removed and replaced with new asphalt concrete. With an Overlay, a layer of new asphalt concrete is placed over the existing roadway. This resurfacing treatment provides additional structural strength to the roadway and a durable wearing surface.

IMPACTS: Inlay and Overlay work will impact Driveway, Parking and Street Access. There will be no parking allowed on the street for the entire work day. There will be no driveway access for the entire work day. Street Access will be limited--The portion of the street being worked on will be closed to vehicular traffic (except for emergency vehicles) for portions of the work day.

Curb and Gutter and Storm Drain Repairs
Before resurfacing, the City will fix serious drainage problems on certain streets. The drainage problems that will be fixed are in areas where the drainage negatively affects the structural integrity of the roadway. In addition, some severely damaged curb and gutter will be repaired for the same reason. The storm drain pipe is installed in a trench that is a minimum of 3’ wide for a 12” diameter pipe; wider for pipe larger than 12 inches in diameter.

Photo of roadwork IMPACTS: Curb & Gutter work will require Driveway and Parking Restrictions in the immediate area of work and Street Access may be reduced to only one way traffic at brief times during the work day.

IMPACTS: Storm Drain work will require Driveway and Parking Restrictions in the immediate area of work, but no street closures. Street Access may be reduced to only one way traffic at brief times during the work day.

Patch Paving
Before resurfacing Overlay and Slurry Seal Streets, structural repairs (such as fixing potholes) will be made for failed pavement areas. Failed areas of the roadway pavement will be cut out and removed (up to 6 inches deep). Then the excavated areas will be rebuilt with an equal amount of asphalt concrete.

IMPACTS: Patch Pave (Dig Out) work will require Driveway and Parking Restrictions in the immediate area of work. Street Access may be reduced to only one way traffic at brief times during the work day, and temporary road closures that will normally be no more than a block at a time for up to 2 hours.

Crack Sealing
Before resurfacing Slurry Seal Streets, cracks in the pavement that are not structurally failed areas will be cleaned and filled with asphalt.

IMPACTS: Crack Sealing work will require Driveway and Parking Restrictions in the immediate area of work. Street Access may be reduced to only one way traffic at brief times during the work day, and temporary road closures that will normally be no more than a block at a time for up to 2 hours.

Striping
Photo of finished street Striping (sometimes called "road markings") are the painted lines and words on the road surface. Striping work, in general, is fast moving and has minimal impacts to parking, driveway and roadway access.

IMPACTS: Striping has minimal temporary impacts to parking, driveway and roadway access.
